Going Through A Divorce? Do These 4 Things

Posted on: 14 July 2020

It can be incredibly difficult to go through a divorce for several reasons. Not only are big changes happening in your life, but you'll be suffering an emotional toll as well due to the whole situation. Here are a few tips to help you get through it all.

Meet With A Therapist

One mistake that people often make when going through a divorce is using their lawyer as their therapist. It's a very emotional time, and you need to talk to a professional about it that can actually help you. Your time with your lawyer should not be used for venting about your frustrations but dealing with the legal matters surrounding the divorce. Working with a therapist can help cut down your legal hours if you find yourself vending to your lawyer about the emotional aspects of the divorce.

Secure Temporary Support Payments

If you were the parent that stayed at home and did not have a source of income, you may find yourself struggling to get through a separation where you and your spouse are not living with each other. You will want to work with your lawyer to secure temporary support payments so that you get the money you need for day-to-day living expenses. You may have been forced to move out of the home and now have unforeseen expenses for housing, or you need child support payments now for immediate expenses.

Be aware that your temporary support payments will not necessarily match what the final support payments will be. Don't be afraid to seek temporary support payments if that is what you are worried about.

Manage Your Family Finances

There are a lot of things that you should be doing to manage your family finances prior to the divorce. Start by running a credit check on both you and your spouse so that you have a full understanding about what is out there on your credit reports. You are looking for things like debts that may later be assigned as marital debts or accounts that are in the other person's name that you were not aware of. Consider paying off those debts that were taken on after the marriage so that you don't have to worry about paying them after the divorce is official.

Collaborate As Much As Possible

A divorce doesn't have to go to trial. In fact, you and your spouse will work out many of the details of your divorce in mediation. Find a way to work collaboratively and make joint decisions together, and save the tough items you can't decide on for working with a neutral party in mediation.
